~ 8th weekend ~

Another weblog entry, and also a second month has passed since I'm here... it's really creepy somehow how fast the time goes by... next Tuesday it'll be 9 (!) weeks!

Well, I finally made it to upload some more pictures. There are some new in the "September 06" - folder ("Art in the heart of Augusta" etc.), and also some new ones from October.

Last weekend was my hostsisters 16th birthday (Oct. 8th, Sunday). So on Friday I went to the "First Friday" in the center of Augusta with her and her boyfriend Erik. Actually they said it would be the last "1st friday" ever, but apparently they will continue to do it, and we think they probably only did it as a promotion, and it actually worked. It seemed like everybody went there. We wanted to first go and it in Mellow's Mushroom (my favorite restaurant here, it's a really cool and modern pizzeria *yam yam*), but they told as that we'd have to wait about 50 minutes because it was that full and the warting list was really long. So we first went through the market, watched some guys with fire, and just fooled around (unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera with me, so I don't have any pictures of that). And then we finally could go and eat. After that we actually planned to stay there for antoher couple of hours, but it really cooled down and Martine and I were tired so we decided to go home again at about 11 p.m.

On Saturday we went kayaking because it was Martine's wish for her birthday. We went to the lake we once went to the pick-nick (not at the same place, though), and it was really fun! :) I had a really good time although it was pretty cold because it was very windy... the water although was really warm (like in a bathtube).
You'll find some pictures of that event in the galleries, but I don't have any pictures from on the kayak because I didn't want to risk to fall into the water with my camera...

And on Sunday we cleaned up the house again, made homework and just relaxed. And in the evening Sherley and I decorated the birthday cake she had baked and sang "Happy Birthday" as you do etc. I also got a couple of pictures of that.

And that was my last weekend... my 9th weekend has already started, but I'm gonna write about it in about a week. So have fun, check the pictures out and leave me a comment, please! :)
Love, Katja

~ 6th and 7th weekend ~

~ 6th weekend ~

Well, my next blog entry is gonna be in English because I’m not feeling like writing in German right now. Mum and Paps, I’m sure Daniel will translate it for you if you’re not able to understand it…

In my last entry I wrote that there was something special on Friday on the 6th weekend.
It was Jewish new year (as far as I know they have several new years, but that one was the “real” new year), and maybe I haven’t told you so far, but my hostfamily is Jewish, and so we had a fancy dinner at home that evening and went to the synagogue after.
The service was pretty interesting, the first and last parts weren’t very different from Catholic church services though, with prayers and songs. In the middle part two Rabbis talked about different things (the first one talked about questions he was asked about Jewish people by non-jewish people [which was a pretty funny speech], and the second one informed about events that were going on), and I realised that you’re actually allowed to laugh in the synagogue – I mean, you’re probably allowed to laugh in the Catholic church, too, just nobody does it. And I didn’t hear the word “sin” as often as you hear it in Catholic services, which was pretty nice, too.
And one thing that they know, too, is that you wish your neighbours in the row “peace”, and of course a happy new year, although it was pretty strange for me personally to celebrate a new year in September. And there was this huge buffet bar after the service (still in the synagogue) with lots of desserts, fruits, and a weird coffe-cream drink and a pineapple punch, and everybody stayed, talked and ate which was very nice. And after that we went back home and continued to eat dinner. I felt like eating all evening which apparently was the case ;) But it was a nice evening!

Last Friday was Sherley’s (my hostmum) birthday as well, but because that was the Jewish new year we kinda celebrated her birthday on Saturday. We went to an “el Salvador” restaurant in South Carolina in the evening and ate there and ate a sweet cheese cake at home after.

On Sunday we only went to the grocery store to get some things, cleaned up the house, made homework and stayed at home the rest of the day...

On Monday I actually ran again, only one lab around the school (1.2 mile) but it was kinda good to do some sports.

~ 7th weekend ~

Last weekend we finally went to Atlanta =) It was really great. Atlanta has about 6.5 million inhabitants which is almost the whole population of Switzerland!
It’s a nice city and has some cool things for tourists.
But we didn’t only go there for sightseeing, we also went there because there was the first YFU meeting in the United States. It was with almost all of the Georgia students and it was really cool. I had a funny time with the others and got to know some other people. It was also very interesting to hear how they lived their first and a half month. (I’ve actually been here now for 7 weeks :), it doesn’t seem that long though, time runs by amazingly fast!).
And well, on Friday evening Sherley and I baked a Swiss carot cake which almost ended in a disaster, but let’s say it that way: we had a carot cake in the end and went to bed at about 12:30 at night *lol*
After the meeting we went to Downtown Atlanta, to the Coke museum. The museum itself wasn’t the most interesting one (it wasn’t that big either), but you could try different cokes and sodas from all around the world which was a lot of fun (and they had some cool things to take pictures of, you’re gonna see them in the galleries). And my sister and I were almost sick after *lol* ;)
After we walked through the museum we went to some stores, and finally went having dinner in a small nice asian restaurant in the center of the city.
And here an advise from me: even if it says “mild” on the menu card, don’t trust it, it will be hot! ;)
That’s all I can say *lol*
And after dinner we went to a huge (and I really mean huge, even for Americans it’s huge) Asian market with all kinds of food (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, sweet etc.). It was really interesting and funny. And we were all really tired after we finally got home at 12:15 at night after a 2 hour drive. But it was an amazing day!

Yeah, and now it’s almost the 8th weekend. It’s really amazing how fast the time goes by. Especially the weekdays. Schooldays were soooo unbelivebaly long in the beginning, and now a school-week is over so fast. And now everything starts to become everyday life. Terms like “kool-aid”, “wear your ID visible” and “Gooood morning A-R-C [morning announcements]” are as normal as bringing a jacket to school although it’s about 30°C outside.

The only “special thing” that happened last week in school was Wednesday. Because in some other schools in Augusta some people wrote threats like “Blood will be shed on 10/4/06” on the toilet doors and because there was almost a shooting in a school bus the security level was really high on the 4th. Normally there are only 2 police guys in the school, on Wednesday there were 8! Every single student had to go through these security things (the ones you always have to go through on the airport, there are 2 of them at the entrance of the school), and if it beeped you had to go through a body security check. They checked every single school and lunch bag (which meant that we started 1st period about 30 min late), and in 2nd period they had dogs walking through the school building, looking for drugs and arms. Well, nothing happened but yeah…

And on Wednesday I also ran a lab around the school right after school and went to play soccer with my hostdad, hostsister and some other older guys for 1 1/2 hour in the evening.

Yeah, and tomorrow is another Friday with another bunch of homework to do, so I better get started now. Oh, by the way, from 16th to 20th of October there’s Homecoming week, and we finally learnt what are the subjects this year:

Monday – Mix ‘n’ match
Tuesday – Team
Wednesday – Superhero (and a Parade through the county at 3:00 p.m.)
Thursday – ARC Spirit Day (plus a Pep rally after school. Yeah purple pride! :))
Friday – No school, in the evening: Home Football game 7.30 p.m.

In Homecoming week everybody (or at least everybody who wants to) dresses up for school for the subjects that are given. I’m gonna take my camera with me and take some pictures for you, I hope a lot of students wear funny outfits and it’s gonna be a cool week :)

Well, anyways, I really have to start studying now. Although I don’t want to :/
I’ll tell you about my coming weekend (my sister’s 16th birthday :)) in about a week.
Greetings from Georgia, miss y’all!
Katja
